THE WEDDING AMEBO EXPERIENCE (THE BEGINNING)

Red lipstick, powder and Kohl, these are just what I applied on my face. No brows, no foundation, no concealer, etc. See, I was feeling myself o. The red lipstick made my lips more beautiful than the red flower of majesty, the kohl i applied made my brown  eyes glow  as though they serve as light to the sparkling stars, the stars sought my companionship at noon, they couldn't wait till night. I wore my flowy gown made of Danshiki with red colour dominating the design on it and I tied a simple brown headtie and wore small earrings. I was all set for  the wedding when my sister came in from her make up artist's, she was looking all fine and shiny on the simple make up on her face. She paused when she was half way into her hostel room and said to me " Ahn Ahn, Queen Queen, you want  the groom to fall in love with you and change his mind about marrying the bride? See as you dey glow abeg even though na make up wey no be make up you do."  She was just admiring me...

NO TIME TO ATTEND WEDDINGS

"Oh😁 thank God you are here💃🏽 I was about to call you!" My sister was excited that morning. I couldn't help but have the feeling that her excitement was unnecessary. I felt she was up to something or she was about to ask for a favour. "What's the excitement about ?" I asked her with a straight face because I was so hungry. I was actually from the gym and her hostel was closer, I know she cooks early. You see,  her hostel was closer and food was closer. "Ah, smile now before I talk." She said as she tickled me but I kept moving away from her. Gosh!  I love tickles but I hate the discomfort it causes to me, tickles make me jump, laugh  and take steps that look like  dance steps, childish ones for that matter. "Okay okay" what I gave her was laughter not even smiles. I went to the table she kept her pot, opened the pot and saw mouth watering macaroni. I fetched some in a plate and went to sit on her be...

A REVIEW OF HANEEFAH ABDULRAHMAN'S "GONE SANITY" BY ABDULSALAM IBRAHEEM KEHINDE

Image
*Gone Sanity: A Reappraisal of Haneefah's Outlet from A Contrastive Periodic Analysis And An Intricate Juxtaposition of Historical Composite.* Haneefah's work, as many other African works, shall be broken into review typically from a three consecutive historical periods in Nigeria: pre-colonial, colonial, and post-colonial periods respectively, taking to account symbolism/satirism  as an analytical tool or tools. It's apposite to here strike the point that the analysis would be informed and underpinned by the antithetical positions and ideological gaps having been created over time by the divergent mindsets endorsed by the drivers of each period. And till date, the ideological gaps have become too wide to breed again as every of the phenomena which characterizes these devilish periods, most especially colonial era, have all boiled down to what Nigerians have woken up to consider as "songs of sorrow", social decadence, political deaths versus reincarnation, soci...

READ IN FEAR

Image
There are moments that can be awkward and embarrassing but fun, crazy moments they are. The year 2019 has been a great one with people around. So many crazy moments a tale too long to end in months,  just few can be talked about. I remember a night , my friend (Talatu) and I went to read in a  bushy part of my school  where animals like snakes wait for preys. We were crazy enough to lay our reading mats on a ground insects were feasting. We even saw a guard kill a snake but we just read in fear. Truth be told, I couldn’t  read and my friend couldn’t too. Not that we didn’t have other  places to read. We were just crazy.

IT IS OKAY FOR WOMEN TO CHEAT ON MEN

There has been a rebellion going on all over the world, all over Africa, all over Nigeria . Some part of the world with few rebels, some part with many rebels. Women have been fighting against men who are violent, who are tyrants to the female specie, who think that because women are seen as weak they cant have any say in politics and the society as a whole. I am one of these rebels. Some of these rebels are feminists while some are womanists. Feminists tend to go beyond fighting for their rights, they have gone wild with being equal with men. My feminist friend thinks it is OK for women to cheat on men since the world  think that it is natural for men to be cheats and polygamous. She sees nothing wrong with her cousin sister cheating on her fiance with three other guys. She believes it is OK if her cousin eventually gets married to her fiance and still decides to have fun with other guys. "My cousin can as well be the head of her family." My friend said. As a womanist, ...

AM YET TO SEE ANY HUMAN WHO IS BLACK

One evening, my friend and I decided to take a walk around. After our normal gossips while walking my friend in an ecstatic way suddenly leaped and said, "I am proud to be black!" "Why the sudden ecstasy about being black ?" I asked in a confused way. "In the south African book CROSS OF GOLD by Lauretta Ngobo, After the retaliatory words Mandla's friend gave to the whites about their skin being bleached, also their feelings being bleached when some whites kids harassed  him. I have being feeling beautifully black." I laughed hard at what she said. The way she said the words and the way she exaggerated her movements in the process of describing her blackness is funny. And I said, "Aren't we all proud of our colour. Of being black ? We are ..." "I have looked around and I am yet to see any human that is black." A stranger voice suddenly cut me short. My friend and I turned around to a man, he was walking behind us and has obv...

IS IT THAT EASY? IS IT GENDER?

What! I am not trying to be judgemental here but, what! Not a thing I have against men, not a feminist I am, I am a womanist , I am just a bossom friend to humanity. So your wife is still in the den of kidnappers and your baby of not more than two weeks old was murdered for not more than two weeks now and the next thing we hear is that you are getting married in few days time! This man must be out of his  mind. That is what I see. Sometimes I don't blame feminists for actually being feminists because the same set of people repeat similar actions over and over  again, men. Trust me, you seldom find any woman having a thought of what this man is about to do? Sometimes I wonder if some men actually have conscious. I actually felt pity for the man this past few days not knowing that he had the intention to kill the already fading hostage of a wife emotionally. I wonder, "Is it that he has given up on his wife." "Oh it could be lust." I know, maybe it would be...

THEY FED AGAIN, THE KIDNAPPERS

I t was 1:00am this morning ! My younger came knocking at my door. "What does he want in my room at this time?" I thought. I opened the door and he said in a restless way  "Can't you hear  gunshots?" I shrugged in a nonchalant way, "I hear gunshots. The police men do that almost every night to scare the kidnappers away." "No, this gunshots I hear are not the same sounds  for the past few nights. They sound like gunshots of battle." My brother replied. I listened, the gunshots were coming after each other  too fast in sounds. It was confirmed at the mosque that the kidnappers visited again when my brothers went for prayers.. I actually thought they were just scaring people with the letter they sent day before yesterday but they were actually serious. They are dauntless for they aren't scared of the police men, the kidnappers visited the street after mine yesterday. Again. They fed on the pain and fear and agony of others for they k...

NO PLACE IS SAFE, CAME BACK HOME TO VIOLENCE.

Violence is a conscious invasion in the hearts of people who consciously welcome it. These people are blind to humanity, they reap their own eyes off from seeing the beauty of souls around them. They derive joy in  making pieces out of hearts and homes of innocent people. Such people are kidnappers I came back home to violence, "The boundary between peace land and violence has been broken." I was told. Most houses in my street were visited by kidnappers a week ago. Wives and children were kidnapped mostly. The kidnappers were so heartless to kill the new born baby (of not more two weeks old) of one of their hostages. They sent the corpse of the baby to the father asking him for ransom before they kill his wife too. Other fathers live in fear of what these beastly humans will do to their wives and children. Some don't have the money for the illegal bail of their family. Those who have the money the kidnappers told must await those that don't have. Hmm, now we hear g...

I AM NOT NIGERIAN

You packed your stuffs from the hostel one evening at the end of the session but you are not packed  yourself. You didn't have transport fare so you had to carry your bed, your small drum and your stove in your hands and you were trekking off campus with all difficulty. You stopped so many times because the stuffs were heavy. You weren't really expecting help from anybody. Not because you have passed different bunches of guys who didn't offer to help but because help will only come when they are Nigerians. You stopped again when you got halfway to your destination and you were stretching you hands when you heard a male voice say "Let me help with the heavy one." But you hesitated even when you knew you needed help, "Umm, no thanks. I will manage." And he insisted, "Don't worry I am not Nigerian." And he helped. Yes! He is a Nigerian. He is not Nigerian means 'He just wants to help. No strings attached. No number collecting.  He is ...

IS DEPRESSION A CHOICE

We see people get depressed. True. We all have our problems but some of us don't get broken  by our problems, we tend to fight so hard. Some people say it is  the choice of humans to get depressed or not, to stay happy or sad and I keep on wondering how that is possible. Is it possible to just sit and decide to get depressed? decide to get mentally shattered ? I just believe that some people are not as strong as others to take in tomes of pain, some are not strong fighters in the battlefield of life, they need the aid of others to survive the  fight. For instance we all know that African parents are tough but some still can't get used to insults , the lack of emotions (not totally though) from these parents, they tend to get frustrated , run from home or even commit suicide which is a cliche that isn't cliche. Some are not so strong to move on when they lose loved ones not because they don't want to move on but because they can't. Some even get inferior by the ...

IS BEING SOCIAL BEING AN EXTROVERT?

This evening I was seated at the garden in my faculty (arts) in Ahmadu Bello University Zaria. Four guys were seated opposite me. They were discussing about what being social means and one of them said, "Being social is being an extrovert." I don't know why but I disagree with that statement. Is the guy trying to make the social world restricted to extroverts ? Does it mean only extroverts are friendly? Does it mean introverts and ambiverts do not enjoy fun? I keep wondering till now because non of the other guys opposed what he said. Is being social really being an extrovert?

DONT WANT TO FALL

There is this friend I met few days ago. We actually didn't begin our first conversation on a good note but we later became good friends (its all about understanding sha) and he opened up to me that he wants to write but he is afraid to share to the world because he doesn't want the world to expect too much from him. He is afraid to rise and maybe falls off when he gets to the climax "Don't we all get scared of what tomorrow holds" I said to him. Every action we take is a risk. We are all scared to disappoint those that expect so much from us but we just have to try.

SCREAMS UNHEARD

It is hard to have a burning heart inside of you, it kills. It isn't easy to walk around an ear piercing whimperer a soul. It is being blind to live with so much unseen tears in your eyes. It is destroying to hear your own voice in the so many voices that screams in your head. Sometimes we hear screaming voices from our friends. We try so much to know why they scream so but their voices are so silent. They fail to even speak to their own hearts but suicide will only let us take a glance not a good look into your world. It is no longer trending ; suicide. It is now an everyday thing which has become a melancholic song to our hearing. It has become old a news which repeats itself. The Tobi I knew was intelligent, he was a fighter, he was nice a coursemate but he wasn't a coward. I know not why he let himself to be possessed by the whispering of suicide. Words are out of me...

BENIN; A TALE HAS TO BE TOLD

There is something adventurous about that place . it seems to be a vague cloth that has to be gotten into before the content is seen. Benin; I have never been there but I see a glimpse of what it is like . Sacred, interesting , deep and a shot of curiosity Have you seen the coronation of their oba; his heavy attire,  the camp fire night ? The always covered faces of the oba's wives ; why? , have you wondered of the religion the Royal family belong to ? Their artifacts , their so heavy not regular beads . A tale to grope for. I really want to explore and one of the first places I will start as an explorer is the sacred city of Benin. A TALE HAS TO BE TOLD.

Beautifully Dark

Image
I never got to really see how beautiful dark complexioned  people are until my cousin sister who so fair in complexion told me to take a look at her. Like take a real good look at her and see that the brightness of her skin colour is what gives her beauty. She wishes to be dark and I asked " Wait do you know people bleach their skin to get as fair as you ?" And she replied " Being fair complexioned  can be sold, you can never find being dark in the market because it is more valuable than even gold." It is OK if you are fair but so many have confirmed that fair people can't be beautiful if  they are viewed to be dark but dark people are vividly viewed to be beautiful on both sides. It is amazing how dirty dark, melanin , ebony complexioned people have built up an empire of beauty.  The thing is people tend not to appreciate what they have . if you are fair, it is what suites you, if you are dark , it is what suits you but humans are just greedy and ungratefu...
